Interesting, Juicy Bit of Information on John McCain Via Arianna Huffington

Ms. Huffington was on Bill Press this morning and they were swapping John McCain stories while talking about their respective books. She revealed that McCain told her that he did not vote for George W. Bush in 2000. Assuming that Huffington's memory is accurate, this means one of three things:

  1. John McCain lied to her. If this is the case, I don't see why any reasonable person would vote for/support such a dishonest person.

  2. John McCain had one of his memory laspes. If this is true, I'd be worried if I was a part of his campaign because I'd be thinking, "What else has this guys said to people?"

  3. John McCain was of sound mind and body, andwas being honest. If this is the line, it makes his conversation from "maverick" to "sellout" all the more interesting.

Also, Press had a story of how he was at the GOP Convention in 2000 and talked to McCain about that year's GOP Primary (him vs Bush). Press asked about the infamous Karl Rove-led push poll in South Carolina, in which voters were asked if they would vote for McCain if they knew he had fathered a black child out of wedlock (when in truth his daughter is adopted from Bangladesh). According to Press, the memory made McCain cry.

Of course, we all know what's happened since: McCain has made a complete 180%-turn and has essentially supported Bush, the Religious Right and the neo-cons for everything from the Iraq War to taxes to religion's role in the political process (namely, only Christians should govern).

I can only say that this struck me as the latest example of how the media has basically turned a blind eye on McCain, opting to frame him as he was in 2000 instead of acknowledging who he is in 2008. It's like in sports when teams pay vet players for things they did five or ten years ago, instead of what they've done last season (or the current one).

UPDATE: Oliver Willis and Ms. Huffington herself discuss this peculiar occurrence (Arianna talks about other John McCain stuff as well), and guess what? Cindy McCain didn't vote for Bush in 2000 either! Jinkies!
