You've Got To Be Kidding Me

When the opposition gets into the White House, suddenly non-issues become serious issues.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama said Monday he had ordered a review into huge cost overruns on a new fleet of presidential helicopters, after his old foe John McCain complained at the skyrocketing cost.

In a good natured throwback to their bitter election duel, McCain mentioned the massively over-budget project when he was called on for a contribution by Obama after a White House "Fiscal Responsibility" summit.

"Your helicopter is now going to cost as much as Air Force One," McCain said, raising concerns about how many military projects tend to come in well over budget.

"I don't think that there's any more graphic demonstration of how good ideas have cost taxpayers an enormous amount of money."

My initial response was: Who gives a rat's ass? Honestly; was this ever big issue when #43 was landing on aircraft carriers in a flight suit? Are we supposed to believe that if Sen. McCain was President McCain, he'd even bring this up? What happened to the neocon's all-encompassing "Commander in Chief" Argument (that I never agreed with, BTW), where anything related to the military or national security was permissible during a time of war? In short, why are the things that Republicans ignored and/or justified under G.W. Bush suddenly so taboo?

But after thinking about it, I think this gives Obama an excuse to cut the fat from the military: any dumb no-bid, every overpriced weapon. And when the xenophobic, war-mongering faction of the GOP start whining (and they will), Obama can say, "Hey, I never would have found out about this if it weren't for John McCain's suggestion."

Comments

McCain probably thought he was being real "clever" by "making" Obama get rid of one of his perks. You know, somehow by making him ride in an "old" helecopter he's scoring some points on Barack. There's not much of a line between Republicans and 5 year olds.
