Remember This, Alamo

I just have to say, from a cultural/regional standpoint, you rarely hear about this happening in an urban town in the north or at the coasts:

TEXARKANA, Ark. — More women are scheduled to take the stand Thursday to accuse jailed evangelist Tony Alamo of taking them as underage brides.

A woman who said she married Alamo at 17 will start the day's testimony. Prosecutors said her words will bolster claims that Alamo took underage girls across state lines for sex between 1994 and 2005.

On Wednesday, a 30-year-old woman told jurors the evangelist "married" her at age 15 and took her on road trips through different states.

[snip]

The woman said she was a third-generation Alamo follower into adulthood — until the Arkansas-based pastor took an 8-year-old as his latest bride. At one point, the woman said, she objected when Alamo graphically described how he fondled the girl as she held a stuffed animal.

"He told me to shut up and that I shouldn't question what `the Lord told me to do,'" the woman said.

The woman also said Alamo's itinerary and number of travel companions helped dictate how often he would schedule sex with female followers.

Prosecutors allege that some girls were brought to him for sex while he was awaiting a 1994 trial on a tax evasion charge.

Classy, huh? Just another example of what happens when people blindly follow warped (and horny) kooks just because they say that they like Jesus. Your standard Christian church will not be advocating sex with minors, let alone marrying them. Those looking for fellowship should go to the non-sex-with-minors style churches, but odds are anyone who actually thinks that allowing their 15-year-old daughter to "marry" some 74-year-old horndog is biblically correct has problems beyond choosing a proper place to praise.

Comments

As a former Oklahoma resident, I can testify to the wackiness of Alamo (though I remember who I presume was Tony's dad and mom, Susie and Jerry Alamo). They were certifiable wackos then, so it's no surprise that their sonny-boy has carried on the tradition, though in a much ickier vein. Personally, I'm surprised that anyone still falls for that bunch - P.T. Barnum was obviously way right.

HA! word verification is "rable"!
