Quote Of The Day

Quite simply, the Punisher was cut into pieces, put back together by an underground community of monsters, provided with even bigger guns and sent to war against an army of monster-hunting samurai led by a skeleton in steampunk armor. That last sentence contains phrases that embody much of what's awesome about comics these days, and that was just the first arc. -- David Wolkin , speaking the truth.

Don't Know Much About Theology

How can people taut their religion as the best when a majority of their own members don't even understand it ? A new survey of Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons outperformed Protestants and Roman Catholics in answering questions about major religions, while many respondents could not correctly give the most basic tenets of their own faiths. Forty-five percent of Roman Catholics who participated in the study didn't know that, according to church teaching, the bread and wine used in Holy Communion is not just a symbol, but becomes the body and blood of Christ. More than half of Protestants could not identify Martin Luther as the person who inspired the Protestant Reformation. And about four in 10 Jews did not know that Maimonides, one of the greatest rabbis and intellectuals in history, was Jewish. The survey released Tuesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life aimed to test

A Poll That Says Alot About Today's Politcs

Interesting . The Pew Research/National Journal poll finds that Republicans, in particular, favor politicians who don't give an inch, with 62% saying they admire leaders who stick to their positions. Democrats take the oppose approach: 54% said they prefer elected officials who compromise. While it's awesome to have a representative who is true to his/her convictions, without occasional compromise very few things would get done in politics. At the same time, trying to compromise with a group who really doesn't want to concede any ground will lead to minuscule and fragile progress. It's not about one side getting its way all the time; it's about finding a healthy, rational consensus. Sadly, what passing for "healthy, rational consensus" these days has been defined by one side who fears their base and another who continuously ignores their base. (Keeping in mind that the Tea Party pretty much hates compromising of any kind, the results of this poll plus the

"Well, I've seen a lot of people run for office and say a lot of things and then when they have the burden of holding office and the responsibility that goes with it. I've seen them become very sobered, very quickly, about the challenges we face domestically and internationally." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on the recent primary results . This is why I'm not too worried, even if someone like Christine O'Donnell wins in the general election. Like many before her, she'll learn real quickly how "the world works" in Congress (incidentally, this is one of the reasons Barack Obama decided to run for president as opposed to staying in the Senate forever; the ability to make substantial changes were better). Your Popular Friends May Be Killing You

Can't wait to see this in a Cracked.com article : As any teenager will tell you, being popular is totally awesome. But it has a downside: According to a new study, popular people tend to catch the flu first. When the flu is going around, people at the center of social networks -- those who are named as a friend by others -- come down with the virus about two weeks earlier than a randomly selected group of people, the study found. Monitoring the health of these socially connected people could serve as an early warning system for flu epidemics and outbreaks of other infectious diseases, the researchers say. The study, which appears in the journal PLoS ONE, was based on a concept known as the "friendship paradox": When people are asked to name their friends, their friends tend to have more social contacts than they do. "If you take a random group of people and you ask them to nominate their friends, their friends will be more central in the network than t

Fridge Brilliance: Joe Biden

It's not exactly a TV Trope , and I haven't really written about the guy for awhile, but this is an (admittedly belated) epiphany nonetheless: How was Joe Biden able to walk the line between tough and sensible during the 2008 Vice Presidential debate with Sarah Palin, whose presence was really the only thing keeping the McCain candidacy alive ? It's no secret that one of the greatest fears amongst Democrats at the time was Biden, being known for "going off script," might, well, say something that would come off as mean to Palin, earning her a victory by default. Answer: his experience in the Delaware Senatorial Debate against none other than Christine O'Donnell , the Palin-anointed GOP nominee for 2010 Delaware Senate seat and current conservative darling ( Mileage May Vary ).

Quote Of The Day

That's because they are too busy waiting for the president to do all the work. They've been riding his fucking coattails since 2008. Before people say he's the leader of the Democratic party; YES, I know this. But they are given openings and opportunities, yet sit back and wait for the president to spoon feed them. Then they complain that he's not doing enough, or he should do it this way, or he should be explaining this or pointing out that. What the fuck? Why aren't they filling the airwaves, going on TV and saying what they want the president to say? How about they grab a mop too? -- It's Pat, responding to the TPM story about Republicans bucking a Republican-friendly tax cut ; more specifically, it's a response to the fact that many Democrats seem to be playing their usual "Let's wait until the 11th hour and see which way the winds are blowing instead of being decisive and aggressive."
