Odd Statues Show Up In DC. CNN Was Clueless; NPR Did Real Investigating.

Image
According to CNN , no one knows where they came from or who's behind it. Maybe they should talk to their journalistic counterparts over at NPR, because they did some actual research : The National Park Service originally granted a permit to a group called Civic Crafted LLC to display the statue until Wednesday evening, but later extended it an extra week through the evening of Nov. 6 — the day after Election Day. NPR has reached out to the woman named in the permit. According to the permit shared with NPR, the statue is called The Resolute Desk and is meant to represent the heart of democracy. "Here, the power of the people finds its expression through the diligent efforts of those who serve the public good," it says. "When rioters broke in to destroy these ideals, this desk stands firm, so too must the principles of equality, justice and freedom that it represents." For the record: Washington, DC has " nearly 28,00 private security cameras ," inclu...

NBC News: European Union Regulators Accuse Apple Of Breaching the Bloc's Tech Rules

Sometimes, Europe gets things right...like going after Big Tech :   European Union regulators on Monday said Apple is in breach of sweeping new tech rules because it does not allow customers of its App Store to be steered to alternatives. The European Commission, the E.U.’s executive arm, also said it had opened a new probe into Apple over new contractual terms with developers. The E.U. opened an investigation into Apple, Alphabet and Meta in March under a landmark new law known as the Digital Markets Act, or DMA, which aims to reel in the power of Big Tech firms. So-called anti-steering rules were one of the big areas of focus of the probe. Under the DMA, tech firms are not allowed to block businesses from telling their users about cheaper options for their products or about subscriptions outside of an app store. On Monday, regulators said in their preliminary findings that Apple was in breach of the DMA because its App Store rules “prevent app developers from freely steering cons...

Trying to Have It Both Ways

Image
Sorry, Mr. President: you're either too old to go to court or crafty enough to be prosecuted ...regardless of what either says about your political chances in the general election. Due Dissidence has their take:

Biden (and Harris), Who Built Their Career On Incarcerations, Will Not Be Investigating the Outgoing President

Let's get this out of the way : Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have no plans to investigate or imprison anyone with influence, money and power unless they become a political or financial problem.  The Democrats might as well prepare for a GOP comeback in 2022. Say goodbye to the House.

Every First-Time President Is "New to the Job"

One of the more interesting things to come out of the Great Comey Distraction (and yes, it is a distraction ) is the growing theme regarding President Trump (many) political failings : he is an extreme novice who needs to be reminded of how a President is supposed to conduct themselves. Let's not even dwell too much that this argument would never have worked as a defense for President Clinton or President Obama when Republicans were attacking them, or that it wasn't one of the many, many justifications for President Bush's goofs. No, let's instead delve a bit into the implications here, and for the sake of argument assume that factors such as race, gender and political affiliation are not relevant (even if they are in real life). During the GOP primary, it was apparent that the GOP establishment did not want Donald Trump to be the nominee. The reasons boiled down to three general categories: Those who saw him as a faux conservative; Those who saw him as a hind...

Like "Police Academy," Only Icky

Just what our enforcement institutions need: more potential sex scandals : The FBI is investigating allegations that female cadets in a widely used, MBTA-run police academy were coerced into having sex with superior officers, according to a law enforcement official and a lawyer representing T police unions. FBI agents have questioned several female and male officers about sexual misconduct allegations dating back to 2002, according to the union lawyer, Douglas I. Louison. The span of years, combined with what one official described as unusual after-hours fraternization between female recruits and male superiors, raises concerns about a culture of impropriety at the academy. The FBI, which started contacting the officers a couple of months ago, asked "just generally about allegations of inappropriate conduct at the academy, and none of the individuals interviewed were advised they were subjects of the investigation," said Louison, who represents the MBTA Patrolman's Associ...
