It's dumb that I can't watch my alma mater play on TV (despite the fact I live 20 minutes away) but at least we seem to be beating on teams again .

Via WashPos t: Four young adults, three of them students at the University of Maryland, were stabbed early Tuesday during an altercation that began in an off-campus bar and spilled onto the street, police said. None of the wounds were life-threatening. Two of the injured are 19 years old, said Cpl. Erica Johnson, a Prince George's County police spokeswoman. One of them is 20, and the other is 23.

Woe are the students at UMCP who were looking forward to some, err, "cinema:" Tickets were selling fast for Saturday night's showing of a "XXX blockbuster" at the University of Maryland's student union. (Pirates! Skeletons! An orgy of belly dancers!) Then, like a douse of cold water, the state Senate stepped in. During debate yesterday over the state budget -- an exercise usually devoid of sex appeal -- a conservative senator drew his colleagues' attention to the scheduled showing of "Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge," a hard-core porn film, at the state's flagship university. The award-winning sequel is almost 2 1/2 hours' worth of, uh, swashbuckling. The cast is full of actors whose names are registered trademarks. The film is full of special effects (to say the least). Legislators were not impressed. Sen. Andrew P. Harris (R-Baltimore County) called it "shocking" and offered a budget amendment: Any public universit...

Why did it take " Recruitmentgate " to motivate the team? Good recruits or not, this team was always good enough to make the damn Tourney. But that didn't change the fact that they lost to some fairly weak teams. It seems that only after people starting talking about whether Gary was getting the right players that the team rallied and made some sort of run. Yes, the guy's an awesome coach, but does he have to get so much media and fan pressure in order for him (and the team) to perform? And if so, why? And also: does this mean next year someone has to attack Gary's ability to coach in order for the team to get into the Tourney?

Proof positive that just cause I run with UMCP, doesn't mean I know everything that goes on there: A Montgomery County lawmaker will introduce legislation tomorrow to allow graduate students and adjunct professors at Maryland's public universities to form unions, setting up a legislative battle over an issue that has hit a nerve at campuses across the nation. Graduate students at the University of Maryland's flagship campus in College Park, many of whom hold campus jobs teaching undergraduates or conducting research for faculty, have partnered with national labor unions and hired an Annapolis lobbyist in the campaign to unionize. The legislation, proposed by Sen. Jamie B. Raskin (D-Montgomery), would give graduate students collective bargaining rights to negotiate stipend pay, benefits and workloads with university administrators. Raskin said the students should be able to form a union, just like the university's clerical workers, mechanics, janitors and campus police. ...
