Slovenia, Venezuela Lose Their Glaciers

Not good : Slovenia and Venezuela are the first two countries to lose their last-standing glaciers in a period of climate change induced by people — but they won’t be the last. Some news outlets reported this month that Venezuela might be the first country in modern times to lose all of its glaciers. However, researchers told E&E News that Slovenia likely claimed the solemn title more than three decades ago. “The two glacial remnants have not moved, [and] there were no glacial crevasses observed in the last few decades — these characteristics define real glaciers,” Miha PavÅ¡ek, who leads ice measurements at Slovenia’s Triglav mountain and Skuta peak with the Anton Melik Geographical Institute, told E&E News.

Looks like a very positive move : Singapore launched a research facility on Thursday to find long-term solutions to protect it from the rise in sea levels from climate change that could put the country's low-lying land at risk of inundation. Singapore's new Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI Singapore) aims to bring in expertise and innovation to head off what government officials describe as the "existential threat" posed by rising sea levels, now increasing at a rate of around 3-4 millimetres a year. Average sea levels are forecast to rise by 1 metre (3.3 feet) by the end of the century, but experts say the effects could be exacerbated by changing rainfall patterns, higher tides and more intense storm surges. "If we don't do this well, our lives are at stake," Grace Fu, Singapore's environment minister, said during an opening ceremony. Nearly a third of the Southeast Asian island nation's territory is only 5 metres or less ...

The Annual Congressional Softball Game reveals quite a bit. First of all, it shows that despite the vitriol we see on cable news, elected officials from two supposedly warring parties can get together for a common cause like helping young adults with breast cancer . Secondly, it shows that our elected officials are more athletic than we assumed . Sadly it also shows that when it comes to helping young adults who are facing a future of climate catastrophes, some in attendance can be quite snobbish:

What climate crisis ? Hundreds of thousands of fish washed up dead along Texas beaches over the weekend as a "perfect storm" of weather, water, and temperature conditions depleted the oxygen they needed to survive. While die-offs like these are naturally occurring, the climate crisis can make them ever more likely. "As we see increased water temperatures, certainly this could lead to more of these events occurring," Katie St. Clair, who manages the sea life facility at Texas A&M University at Galveston, told The New York Times Sunday, "especially in our shallow, near-shore or inshore environments." Thousands of dead fish began washing up on local beaches in Texas' Brazoria County Friday, Quintana Beach County Park wrote on Facebook. The park wrote that the fish were mostly Gulf menhaden. The carcasses continued to wash in on Saturday. Park supervisor Patty Brinkmeyer told CNN that the dead fish numbered in the "hundreds of thousands...

Oh, Canada : Millions of people across the Midwest are under dangerous air quality conditions Monday, as smoke from wildfires in eastern Canada wafts over the region. Hazy skies have blanketed a wide swath of the country from the Ohio Valley to as far south as the Carolinas. Air quality advisories are in effect Monday in southeastern Minnesota and parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as well as in more than 60 counties in Wisconsin. The spike in air pollution comes from wildfires that have been raging in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Nova Scotia. “A band of smoke from wildfires in Quebec will continue to linger across east central and southeast Minnesota today due to very light winds,” the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency tweeted Monday, adding that air quality should improve in the evening as thunderstorms help disperse smoke particles from the air. Canada is experiencing one of the worst starts to its wildfire season ever recorded. More than 6.7 million acres in the cou...

Like Flint, Michigan and others before it, another American city has such poor water conditions they can't flush or floss : (CNN)Already dealing with flooded streets, residents of rain-battered Jackson, Mississippi, are now contending with little or no water pressure in their homes after the city's main water treatment facility failed Monday, leaving them without enough water to flush toilets or fight fires, Gov. Tate Reeves said. The governor said he will declare a state of emergency for the state's largest city and state authorities are scrambling to begin distributing water to 180,000 residents. The city's troubled water system has been plagued with issues for years. In February 2021, a winter storm shut down Jackson's entire water system, leaving tens of thousands of residents without water for a month amid the Covid-19 pandemic. On Monday evening -- as Jackson residents were dealing with record-setting rain that resulted in the Pearl River cresting at a danger...

Like, a lot : New York (CNN Business)Nearly three quarters of US farmers say this year's drought is hurting their harvest -- with significant crop and income loss, according to a new survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, an insurance company and lobbying group that represents agricultural interests. This year's drought conditions are taking a harder toll than last year's, as 37% of farmers said they are plowing through and killing existing crops that won't reach maturity because of dry conditions. That's a jump from 24% last year, according to the survey. July was the third-hottest on record for the US and ranked in the top 10 for every state in the West except for Montana, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. The US Department of Agriculture's weekly weather and crop bulletin ending the week of August 6 reported "rapidly intensifying drought gripped the central and southern Plains and mid-South, depleting topsoil moistu...

I don't fault CNN for having a food section, or even for their celebrity journalists for having recipes, but considering all the things that are going on in the world, like: Julian Assange War Sanctions against other Counties (which is basically a declaration of war) Or things going on in America (in addition to the above): Police Brutality/Militarization of Law Enforcement People Trapped in Student Loan/Credit Card/Medical Debt Homeless Crisis Flawed Healthcare System Increasing Infringements on Speech ( currently being disguised as "protection" ) Continued Deregulation Crusade Against Worker's Rights Institutional Racism Media Consolidation The Defunding of our Educational System Or heck, even positive things like: Steven Donziger leaving jail ( but still being under house arrest) The first (and second) Starbucks Union Democratic Elections in the Global South They decide to put a section of their celebrity journalist's personal recipes on the front page of t...

As with most things, COVID-19 revealed. Case in point, the world's tenuous supply chain : Seafarers, truck drivers and airline workers have endured quarantines, travel restrictions and complex Covid-19 vaccination and testing requirements to keep stretched supply chains moving during the pandemic. But many are now reaching their breaking point, posing yet another threat to the badly tangled network of ports, container vessels and trucking companies that moves goods around the world. In an open letter Wednesday to heads of state attending the United Nations General Assembly, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and other industry groups warned of a "global transport system collapse" if governments do not restore freedom of movement to transport workers and give them priority to receive vaccines recognized by the World Health Organization. [SNIP] "The global supply chain is very fragile and depends as much on a seafarer [from the Philippines] as it does on a tr...

This guy spent money (that could have been used to save the planet) on his self-indulgent trip into outer space for barely 11 minutes, and when he literally came back to earth, he had this to say : "We live in it [Earth] and it looks so big. If feels like, you know, this atmosphere is huge and we can disregard it and treat it poorly. When you get up there and you see it, you see how tiny it is and how fragile it is. We need to take all heavy industry, all polluting industry, and move it into space, and keep Earth as this beautiful gem of a planet that is is." Sweet Baby Jesus . On first read, that might sound humble and benevolent. I mean, it's not like the guy owns a company that's a modern-day plantation . But if you were to read that quote again, it sounds like he wants to POLLUTE SPACE in some twisted solution to Climate Change. However: The biggest sources of air pollution range from our modes of transportation to stationary sources that provide people with ...

Yowza . Greenland ice, it seems, can vanish in a flash, with new satellite images showing that over just a few days this month nearly all of the veneer of surface ice atop the island's massive ice sheet had thawed. That's a record for the largest area of surface melt on Greenland in more than 30 years of satellite observations, according to NASA and university scientists. The images, snapped by three satellites, showed that about 40 percent of the ice sheet had thawed at or near the surface on July 8; just days later, on July 12, images showed a dramatic increase in melting with thawing across 97 percent of the ice sheet surface.
