Food For Thought: Capitalism-Fueled Dating Edition

Two stories from Delish, a year apart, about how food is playing a role in relationships (and by extension how capitalism is playing a part in both)... First, from July 2024: " The Shady Way Some Restaurants Are Catfishing People on Dating Apps " If you’ve spent any time watching Catfish on MTV, you’re probably familiar with the risks of online dating. People posing as someone they’re not is something all singles need to watch out for as they swipe on apps. But apparently there’s a chance you might not be catfished by another person at all—you might be getting scammed by a restaurant. A trend is emerging where restaurants are posing as eligible singles on dating apps to lure users to dine at their establishment. The scam has been dubbed “food digging,” derived from the term “gold digger.” The scam has been primarily reported in cities like Delhi, India, but Taylor ParĂ©, also known as @paretay on TikTok, claims that food digging has come stateside. ParĂ© posted a video to TikT...

Enter: Rielle Hunter

This is a very interesting GQ interview with the now-infamous mistress of John Edwards. If I could rank her as far as celebrity mistresses go, I'd say she's the classiest and smartest one yet. If there one quote from her worthy of repeating for the ages, it would be: "People pay attention to scandal more than they pay attention to politics." So that's the short version. For the long version, some notes/observations: Like just every other mistress, she is heads over heals in love with the guy and believes that he's completely honest with her. Her account of how she first met John Edwards and how Elizabeth Edwards found out about the affair are completely different than what's been out there. Again, she has a brain ("Who gets a cell phone for a one-night stand?") From her POV, Ms. Edwards was the shot caller in the marriage. Hunter sees John Edwards as more of a humanitarian than a politician, saying his position to embrace the latter contributed...

Cartoonist Ted Rall On Tiger Woods, His Apology and Monogamy

This is a very interesting take ; here's a sample: Nowhere in America lives a kid who looked up to Tiger because he thought he was faithful to his wife. Woods wasn't some right-wing hypocrite. He didn't preach. His church was the Chapel of Sports Excellence. Apologize? What for? I'm not even sure he owes his wife an apology. According to various reports (although I fathom not how said accounts were sourced), Woods' wife lost interest in sex after having kids. If she turned colder, oh well. Things happen. Tiger didn't have the right to demand that she put out. But he had every right—the duty, even, if there was to be any chance of his keeping his family intact from divorce—to have some fun on the side. If Mrs. Woods wanted it ten times a day, on the other hand, he owes her an apology. Her. Not us.

Moving Day

Casualty of a scandal . COLUMBIA, S.C. - The wife of philandering South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is moving out of the official governor's residence with their four sons for the school year. First lady Jenny Sanford and several other woman moved clothing and boxes from the mansion in Columbia on Friday. In a statement, Sanford said she is moving to the family home on Sullivan's Island, some 120 miles east, but will continue working on her marriage. Personally, I hope their marriage can be healed.
