What Happens When You Vote For Political Parties (Instead of the Issues & Policies)

You get someone who, despite doing something very noble back in the day, now starts talking about making nice with his opponents (who had nothing nice to say about him) and all but throwing the voters who secured his victory under the bus.

Super-Surprise Me

Morgan Spurlock relates a personal story that is one part confession, one part redemption and one part acknowledgment that we have a long way to go in dealing with man/relationship dynamics (let alone the rape and harassment culture).  Very few men are willing to admit what he has, and let's hope that this inspires others to do the same. Also, let's hope that his accuser (as well as others) get the justice and/or peace of mind they are seeking.

MSNBC Reveals That The Democrats Are Ignoring Their Base (Again)

Image
H/T: the Humanist Report Here's my question: why is it that whenever either the Democrats or the Republicans lose, the solution is to become more conservative. Republicans usually says something along the lines of, "Candidate X did not campaign on our party's conservative values" while Democrats will say something like, "We need to avoid running to the left." Well, you have pro-corporate rich guys threatening to cut Democrats off if they dare to do anything progressives . Progressives are being purged from the ballot and f rom positions of influence and power . Hillary Clinton touted the fact that Henry Kissinger supporter her in the general election. These actions haven't endured the Democrats to their base and doubling down will most likely end up losing support. (Oh, and raising a ton of money should not be seen as a sign of political succes s when you can't win elections).

Papa Johns Is Terrible (And the Pizza Ain't That Great Either)

Image
Remember when the owner of Papa John's was complaining about the ACA (aka, Obamacare), saying that it was hurting his business. I mean, who cares if the guy making your pizza is sneezing and coughing all around the kitchen if you can get a medium for under $10.00? Well, the guy has a new target : politically-minded athletes: To hear Papa John’s founder John Schnatter tell it, better suppression of First Amendment rights make for better pizza sales. Schnatter told shareholders on a conference call that NFL players’ protests over racial injustice are killing his pizza business during the games,  according to the New York Daily News . He also blamed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for not putting the protesting players in their place. A prominent sponsor of the NFL, the pizza company’s position is that the protests are to blame for the NFL’s sagging ratings, which, in turn, are driving down pizza sales. “The NFL has hurt us,” Schnatter told his shareholders. “We are disappointe

Why Most of the United States Aren't Registered as Democrats or Republicans, In One Picture

Image
Of course, this picture was taken before Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump became political rivals. Since then, Clinton's gone on to say that Trump makes her skin crawl. So either she's lying now (gotta sell that book!) or she was putting on a good for the party (or her husband, but why?). Anyway, about 40% of voters are independent. Less than 30% are Democrats, and less than 30% are Republicans. Full Disclosure: I'm still registered with one of the parties for the sake of getting (and laughing at) their notifications. But both parties have their flaws. Republicans continue to shield and support racists, misogynists, homophobes, non-Christians and immigrants because those people make up too much of their base to ignore. The Democrats are in bed with Wall Street, and love that cash too much to pay attention to their base. Both parties love Big Pharma and the prison-industrial complex. Those who were paying attention noticed this during Clinton and Trump's back-and-

OMG HE PLAYED POKER!

There's a story from the NYT that would have us to believe that Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock's trigger-happy rampage is connected to his love for online poker. I really don't remember gambling addictions being attributed to the people on Wall Street who played around with people's money during the housing crisis. But then again, the victims there lost their livelihood, not their lives. Also, maybe Paddock having more guns then Neo from the Matrix might have been a factor. I mean, a gun hoarder would make me raise an eye-brow over someone who likes poker a little too much. (Oh also he STARED at people and looked unpleasant while gambling. Sounds more like a "poker face" to me).

As Long As You Don't Hurt Their Bottom Line, You Won't Get Fired

" I find it absolutely amazing that people think a huge company like Comcast spends its time telling a weekend cable host what to say . " - Joy Ann Reid How about a huge company like ESPN? What if someone there made a comment that could put the company in hot water? Obviously, Ms. Reid has heard about Ms. Hill's comments and has given her opinion on them . But I can't help but notice that her angle of commentary is that "Trump White House = Bad For Wanting Jemele Hill Fired" and not, "A Huge Company, When Pressed On, Can Influence Their Employees; What Was I Thinking?" I mean, it wasn't too hard for the Root to come to that conclusion . Trump voters and Trump supporters like sports. ESPN is all about sports. If ESPN employee of note makes negative comments about Trump, of course his sports-loving supporters will be riled up, and of course a group like ESPN will scramble to cover their butt. Because whether it's entertainment,

Hillary Clinton Is Just Too Status Quo For Her Own Good

First, read this , watch this and read this to see where I'm coming from. The common thread here is Clinton has accepted the world we live in to a degree, and is shocked whenever someone does something or says something that doesn't fit the narrative. Whether it's a news organization's goal of ratings/profits, young voters being enamored with Bernie Sanders, or completely toning down her religious leanings, Clinton is seeing everything from a perspective of The Status Quo. For those who don't know, politically-speaking The Status Quo says that the Affordable Care Act (aka, Obamacare) isn't perfect but it's the best Americans can hope for. TSQ says that the police are just doing their job, and if minorities (and the occasional white woman) are harassed or even killed, it's all for the greater good. TSQ says that all registered Democrats must support anyone with a "D" next to their name because the Republicans are mean and naughty. TSQ says

Privilege Is NOT a Way Of Life

I say this for those who believe, like apparently 39% of Americans, that white people are "under attack" in America. Of course this is a stretch in logic . There are plenty of reasons (given in the link) why by any reasonable metric this feeling is unfounded. But I supposed that is the crux of the matter: something is making people feel this way. Because white people are not being rounded up, separated from their families or targeted by the authorities. If 9-11 happened, like, every month, in cities that were predominately white and the terrorists behind it were sending videos after each event claiming that this was because of white people, then that could be called an attack. The only thing that can be arguably in danger is white privilege. Not the ability to argue with a police officer without fear of getting shot. Not having to worry about someone placing bananas or nooses on the door to your children's dorm-room. Not being labeled lazy because you can't

Can't Let Something Like a City-Destroying Storm Get In the Way of Profits!

Joel Osteen, he of soothing voice and prosperity gospel advocacy, was recently in the spotlight for being shamed to opening the doors of his church to flood victims who may or may not all be part of his congregation . It's good that he finally did (hey, it took Moses a little while to get with the program; God's used to working with stubborn people). HOWEVER... When you run a tax-exempt organization that's allowed to do most anything without scrutiny, you gotta find some way to compensate for those bums who may be *gasp* trying to take advantage of your (strong-armed) goodwill! So why not pass that plate around while people who are looking for shelter are still hanging around ? They may not have a house, but I bet there's still money in the bank! Let it be said that this humble blogger's theory is: Osteen never wanted to open the church as a shelter in the first place because he was thinking about Sunday service, and he wanted his congregation to come into

The Democrat's "Resistance" Needs Work

On the heals of a Russian scandal*, defending protests that included a modern-day Nazi running over people with his car, and hawking a book while Houston was drowning, California Senator Diane Feinstein (D) had this to say about President Trump : “The question is whether he can learn and change,” Feinstein told the crowd at the Commonwealth Club event. “If so, I believe he can be a good president...w e’ll have to see if he can forget himself enough and have the type of empathy and direction the country needs... there are things that can be done.... I have to work with people and a punch in the nose is not going to do it." OK fine, I get it, you don't wanna fight all the time. But let's just remind ourselves that there is very little about Trump's agenda that should appeal to any Democrat. And therein lies the rub: there are Democrats in Congress who will work for any person who happened to be President, whether it was Trump, Hillary Clinton or Dracula. They are th

C'mon guys; stop counting your money and start working on the issues (Universal Healthcare, Affordable College, Repairing our Infrastructure, Police Reform, Ending Unnecessary Wars, Getting Money Out of Politics, Creating a Viable Jobs Program).

Food For Thought

Remember whenever there was a shooting at a school or other public place, and if someone asked for either tougher gun legislation or just to enforce what's on the books, the reaction was some comment about cars ("They kill people too, should be ban them?")? Well fast forward to what went down in Charlotte VA, where a guy actually did use his car to attack people, and someone died. Interesting how the defenders are saying that this was an accident and not intentional, huh?

If You're An Older Black Man in the Marvel Netflix Universe, You're Probably Going to Die

Image
I was hoping that this unfortunate pattern would be broken with "The Defenders," but alas, once again, an older black man died on a Netflix Marvel show. um... SPOILERS ! Of all the pros and cons of the team-up series and each character's respective shows (and personally, I still think the good outweighs the bad) this is the most annoying. To wit (most of these guys can be found under tvtrope's MCU:New York citizens entry): Daredevil : Ben Urich; choked to death by the Kingpin (with his bare freaking hands, no less). Urich and Karen Paige were both digging into Fisk's history for dirt, but Karen managed to slip past Fisk's radar.  Jessica Jones : Detective First Grade Oscar Clemons; shot in the head by Will Simpson. By the time this had happened, Simpson was hopped up on pseudo-super soldier performance enhancers, not to mention an obsession with keeping Jessica's step-sister/best friend safe. Clemons was basically in the wrong place at the wr

Neo-Nazi Who Talked About Attending a Protest With Weapons Claims That He Didn't Want To Get Hurt

Seriously . But for me, here's the money quote: “The problem is that my country has descended to a point where your political opinions get you charged with felonies, and that’s what I’m upset about,” he said. “I get a little emotional about the fact that all this is going on, and now people want to throw me in prison because I want to save my race and nation.” Oh Please. I am curious to how removing statues celebrating pro-slavery is threatening his "race and nation." Last I checked the current President shares his views, and as far as his race goes, the demographics of those running Wall Street, Congress, and the entertainment industry reflect him as well. Now economically-speaking...

Thought of the Day

If people were as passionate about protecting the environment as they were about protecting statues, then out planet would be in much better shape.

If You Really Want To Help

If you're not black, you witnessed what happened in Charlotte, VA, you are adamantly opposed to what the protesters are all about, have read stories like this and this , and are confused because you just really want to help and show support and don't know how... Here's one humble solution, broken down in steps. Declare your candidacy for elected office (state or federal, executive or legislative, it doesn't matter). Run a campaign without taking lobbyist money (that way you won't be obligated to follow their agenda). Create/enact policies that will help the working class (here, "help"means "reduce their expenses and increase their disposable income." Make sure that these policies help as many people as possible in your sphere of influence. Refuse to do any TV shows and/or interviews that will not allow you to talk in details about your policies (your opinions are not relative to having the policies enacted). Make sure that some of yo

They Are Still Punching Down

Michael Tomsky writes a very interesting (and sure to be shared) opinion piece about how that Donald Trump's uncouth approach regarding foreign affairs is an example of why Hillary Clinton should have gotten more votes from liberals/progressives: I’ve been looking back over some articles from last year and am reminded that it was a surprisingly robust theme, this idea that Clinton was more dangerous than Trump. I doubt many votes hinged on this single issue, but it became a key talking point in the larger narrative that Clinton was corrupt and unprincipled and there really wasn’t much difference between her and Trump. Do Tell. Most of this nonsense came from the anti-Clinton and anti-Democrat left. Here, for example, was  Jill Stein , a reliably useful idiot, appearing on C-SPAN last October: “On the issue of war and nuclear weapons, it is actually Hillary’s policies which are much scarier than Donald Trump who does not want to go to war with Russia.” She favored Trump on

Marvel's the Defenders Viewing Order

For those of you wanting to prepare for August 18th's premiere of "The Defenders" on Netflix, here's one humble blogger's suggested viewing (NOTE: I know some fans prefer particular shows over others for various reasons, but I'm recommending that people watch all four series): Daredevil Season One Jessica Jones Season One Daredevil Season Two (stop right after Episode 9, "Seven Minutes in Heaven") Luke Cage Season One (stop right after Episode 3, "Who's Gonna Take the Weight?") Daredevil Season Two (pick up on Episode 10, "The Man in the Box" Luke Cage Season One (pick up on Episode 4, "Step in the Arena") Iron Fist Season One There's some minor character crossover with Daredevil and Luke Cage, so while switching back and forth may be a little annoying (the tones of each show are different, but not too much) it helps with continuity. In terms of, "Why watch all four?" I'll answer by t

It's Not Just About The Money.

Nancy Pelosi is a fundraiser for the Democrats, and a darn good one . But considering that Hillary Clinton raised more money than Donald Trump and still lost the election, we should not equate "raising a lot of cash" with "winning elections." Yet, t hat is what appears to be happening . Wining elections will come when the Democrats show that they are fighting in Congress. The best (but not only) way to do this is introduce legislation that gives words and life to their message and values. I know, "What's the point if it doesn't pass in a GOP-controlled Congress?" The point is that: There is a record that Democrats advocated something; It could garnish enough attention to give them on TV, where that can control the narrative; They can go after Republicans for repeatedly shooting down their attempts to improve the lives of millions of Americans. The GOP got votes not because they just talked about repealing the ACA, but because that'

It Only Matters When It Affects Them Personally

Shorter Caitlyn Jenner: President Trump, you can bash immigrants, degrade women, insult minorities and chastise other religions, but when you ban transgendered people from serving in the military, that's crossing the line .

Messaging vs The Message

The Democratic Party's problem, in a nutshell, is that they believe their recent losses and the "sudden" lack of enthusiasm from their base and the "center" is due to poor articulation. They want to move on, and with a plan to win the middle again . To do this, they are being lead by the same Democratic Senator who said losing one Democratic voter from the urban areas to gain two Republican voters from the suburbs was ideal .   He's not exactly a fighter for the people . But I digress: the new better deal includes some things that might have helped Hillary Clinton win the damn election, as well as things designed to get the attention of dissatisfied Trump voters . Maybe it will give them just enough seats in the mid-terms to keep this tug-of-war with Republicans going, while both parties focus on things they agree on (like conducting war for profit). What it doesn't do is "wow." There's not much in this proposal that makes me th

In Politics, Status Quo Is God

Because Status Quo keeps those who make money in a place to keep making money. Because politicians are too lazy and/or scared to do actual research to make necessary changes. The ACA, aka Obamacare, is now status quo (as flawed as it is). But it is Status Quo, Republicans can't really change or repeal it . And Democrats aren't lifting a finger to improve it . Sure there are things like "voters" and "the will of the people," but those pale in comparison of Big Pharma, who is essentially accepting of this particular Status Quo. So much so they pretty much run the most Democratic, left-leaning state in the country . Remember when the GOP promised their voters that they'd outlaw abortion every election cycle, yet could never push it through Congress? Remember when Obama pushed for Single Payer as a candidate an was rewarded a Democrat-friendly Congress, only to essentially nationalize Mitt Romney's health care plan? Status Quo is their God

States With High War Casualties Tended to Lean Toward Donald Trump

The military is always an interesting demographic, particularly because it's changing . But also because those connected to the military (spouses, parents, children, friends) can be a good indicator of how people feel about things like war and global politics. Well, after two Bush wars and at least seven extended conflicts with Obama (a combination of Bush's wars, drone-lead assaults and other skirmishes involving troops), these people seem to bet tired of the whole thing. At least, that's how they may have voted. The Intercept has a story that supports the theory that President Trump won over voters connected to military casualties . It should be noted that while Hillary Clinton was marginalizing Black Lives Matter and calling Bernie Sanders supporter sexists, Trump was promising factory workers that they would keep their jobs and war survivors that conflicts would end. Now while the truth is ugly (namely that Clinton's disdain for those who opposed her was gen

Blog Cleaning

Quick Programming Note: This blog will be undergoing some cleaning up. While I would like to say that this space hasn't changed in tone/perspective, it's been noticed that other spaces have been. As far as content, expect the same sports/entertainment/politics/whatever you have become strangely dependent on. On that note, one clarification: WTN does not view politics as sports. In sports, a team is supported even if the players and coaches and owners are crappy (performance-wise; if they're criminals or morally bankrupt than they seriously need to go). But in politics, a crappy politician is a crappy politician, regardless of their affiliation.

For Trump, It Starts and Ends with Mexico

Grieving family members of an immigrant murderer? Deport them. That has been a stance President Trump has taken since almost before he gave serious thought to running for office, and these families are some of his most loyal supporters . Sure his bans have be challenged (and are now going to Supreme Court) but he's stuck to his guns on this issue, and they will stick by him. Unless, of course they live in Indianapolis : A promise made before Christmas is fizzling before the Fourth of July. In December, then-President-elect Trump told hundreds of workers at the Carrier manufacturing plant that he had worked out a deal to save their jobs. But it's not working out that way. A steady downpour today did little to wash away the fact that the jobs of 600 union employees are going south. [snip] Blasting companies for moving American jobs abroad was a feature of the Trump campaign, and saving the Carrier jobs was touted as a sign of Mr. Trump's bargaining prowess.

Every First-Time President Is "New to the Job"

One of the more interesting things to come out of the Great Comey Distraction (and yes, it is a distraction ) is the growing theme regarding President Trump (many) political failings : he is an extreme novice who needs to be reminded of how a President is supposed to conduct themselves. Let's not even dwell too much that this argument would never have worked as a defense for President Clinton or President Obama when Republicans were attacking them, or that it wasn't one of the many, many justifications for President Bush's goofs. No, let's instead delve a bit into the implications here, and for the sake of argument assume that factors such as race, gender and political affiliation are not relevant (even if they are in real life). During the GOP primary, it was apparent that the GOP establishment did not want Donald Trump to be the nominee. The reasons boiled down to three general categories: Those who saw him as a faux conservative; Those who saw him as a hind

Quote of the Day

Whatever you think, the fact is they built a legit dynasty: they started the best long-range shooter ever (Curry), one of the best scorers of his generation who can also defend (Klay), one of the most versatile in the league at his position (Green), and then  brought off the bench  one of the best on-ball defenders of his generation. That’s a dynasty! They won a title, won 73 games, came within a few plays of another title! So let’s see what they can do next year. But then they add to it the …  second-best player in the league ? I don’t need to go into the technical details of what this does. We all see it: Curry’s resting, Klay has an off night, Draymond’s in foul trouble, Andre’s missing threes, doesn’t matter: Durant will clean up. The last two years, it mattered: a bad night from just one star opened the tiny window of opportunity for LBJ to do his superhuman shtick. But this year they just bring in a rested Durant—Durant!—and go on an 11-0 run in 90 seconds. Or bring in a rested

Democratic Leaders Are Not About To Let Progressives & Liberals Ruin Their Fun

Earlier this week I was greeted by an email (that everyone who signs up with his list receives) from Senator Chuck Schumer. It goes like this: I'm going to say something you might not have heard from many Democrats in the past few months: I'm feeling good. Recently, while I watched the Kansas House election, I was reminded of just how fired up Democrats are at this point in time. In a state that President Trump overwhelmingly won (by 31 points), I watched as James Thompson -- a populist Democrat -- organized a movement to take back his state. In the end, the Republican candidate squeaked by only after everyone from Donald Trump to Mike Pence and Ted Cruz had to help campaign. This is huge. We can't ignore it. Democrats are, in the words of Brooklyn resident Beyoncé, getting in formation. We are pushing back and we have the GOP back on their heels. We are showing our fight -- and I don't expect it to stop. But the momentum is only going to keep going if every

Reminder: The GOP's Biggest complaint About Obama Was That He Was Obama

Image
So we see here that the GOP just loves it when Republican President Donald Trump decides to get all bomb-droppy, but when Obama was thinking about it, the opinion was vastly different: The Washington Post follows up on this , lest we think that the previous President's part affiliation (or race) wasn't really a factor: There was actually another Washington Post-ABC News poll that tested views of what the United States should do in response to Syria using chemical weapons. It came  in December 2012  —  before  the 2013 chemical weapons attack. It was a hypothetical. The question: “What if the Syrian government uses chemical weapons against its people? In that case would you support or oppose U.S. military involvement in Syria?” In response to this question, fully 67 percent of Republicans said they would support military involvement.

When Obama was president, Republicans dropped impeachment threats all the time. We all knew they weren't going to do anything (either their case was flimsy or the person making it had little credibility), but the threat served three purposes: It let the President know that they will be watching his every move for screw-ups; It let the party's base know that they are worth being in the majority; It let the opposition party know that they should play nice (whether they were in power
