I'm holding out on one faint hope which someone suggested somewhere (maybe it was here?): That the bill gives immunity from civil lawsuit, but not criminal. Perhaps (and I realize it's a very long shot), Obama will allow his DOJ to investigate the whole thing. Maybe there might even be a few scraps of evidence left over after the BushCorp leaves the White House. Maybe it might even lead to charges being filed.

I agree that it isn't really our "darkest hour" per se, but the reality is Congress did OK the right for Bush to spy on America (in order to protect America?). Vegas odds say that his previous "activities" probably turned up some info that key Democrats don't want exposed, hence the capitulation. I (sadly) have no proof of this, so consider it a theory.

In any case, I think the Police sum up the bottom line quite nicely.
