Wizards Better Learn This Lesson Fast
"When that shot goes in, obviously, we're thinking it's winning time, but then we let them off the hook."
That came from Antonio Daniels, the main backcourt sub for the Washington Wizards. I'm sure fans will hear variations of this sentence for the rest of the season. Why? Because it doesn't seem to me that the Wizards (collectively) understand that they are a top team in the East, and that opposing teams will be gearing up for them on a regular basis.
Other than playing good team defense, that should be their focus. Not whether or not Arenas will stay. Not whether or not this is a "make or break" season. Not whether or not Eddie Jordan will be coaching next season. The question they need to think about is, "What are we gonna do about this bullseye on our back?"
Now when Jordan makes a decision like last night (putting Daniels on the Pacer's Tinsley instead of using Stevenson) a person has to wonder. If you're trying to stree defense this year, why not make sure one of your best defenders is in the game at crunch time? Yeah, the guy had sat out awhile, but wouldn't you have known 2 minutes in whether or not he had the energy and stamina to keep up? Isn't this the reason coaches save an extra timeout or two?
There's a target on the Wizard's back. No, they haven't won anything, but it's still there. And they better start playing like sooner rather than later.
