In Trying to Convince the Left to Vote For Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders Omits The Reality.
We can at least say that an attempt was made:
Sadly, "Trump is worse" is not sufficient enough when the alternative to "opening supporting genocide" is, "passively endorsing genocide." And on the issue of Gaza, the West Bank and the Palestinian people that's the difference between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Never mind that Harris's latest response to American voters who are concerned about genocide is basically: "You should worry more about being able to afford groceries."
Here's Sanders' "plan" for dealing with PM Benjamin Netanyahu (either by coercing him or replacing him):
- An immediate ceasefire;
- The return of all hostages;
- A surge of massive humanitarian aid;
- The stopping of settler attacks on the West Bank;
- The rebuilding of Gaza for the Palestinian people.
So let's address these points, shall we?
Neither Netanyahu nor his political party wish for a ceasefire. The return of hostages is not as important to Israeli leadership than it is to American leaders or Israeli citizens. The Israeli military is blocking all aid going to Palestinians. Settler attacks will not stop, because it is part of the plan for "Greater Israel." Because of the afore-mentioned points, Israel will not allow Gaza to be rebuilt.
And, because this is not clear to people like Sanders, even the most liberal and mainstream of Israeli citizens are not far off from Netanyahu and his Likud Party when it comes to how Palestinians are viewed, in particular by the IDF.
In the end, the best option to halt the genocide is to stop the sales of weapons to the country that's using them for genocide. Those weapons are being sold by the United States, and the President of the United States can put that to an end. The next thing that should be done is recognize Palestine as an official state, which would allow it's citizens to do things like leave the country and create an actual governing body and military.
P.S.: much as Harris did, Sanders brought up abortion and climate change as reasons to not choose Trump. Fine; but these are not issues that Harris nor the Democratic Party are strong on either. Roe v Wade was overturned for two reasons: former president Barack Obama (who refused to persuade Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg to retire early enough to get in a replacement and who didn't push the Democratically-controlled Congress to codify Roe v Wade) and the Democrats as a whole, who decided to make codification an election-conditional promise instead of an action item to flaunt. As for climate change: the US military is the country's largest climate polluter; stop the wars and you can save the planet.
