A Reminder About Political Gatekeepers

Political Gatekeepers (PG) are a tricky bunch. They have representatives on both the right and left of the political spectrum, so neither side can claim a monopoly. At first glance, they actually seem like they want real fundamental change, and some may even position themselves as influencers or leaders of the movement of the moment. But there are some signs that reveal their true identity: You Can Never Be More "Left" Or "Right" Than They Are : Be careful when objecting over a policy or a tactic; you may be dubbed "extreme" or "alt." The PGs are standard-barer, and even if you're on the same side most of the time, the times you are not it will be you who are in the wrong. The full wrath of a PG will come out if your objection threatens their bottom line, which is usually connected to the movement, it's leader(s), and/or the political infrastructure. Which leads to... You Cannot Ever Challenge the Overall Leader of the Movement . The Le...

In a sense, this is a bewitching hour of sorts; the time between raising hell over the Department of Homeland Security's latest report (I mean: damn !)and simultaneously promoting and scaring people over the "Tea Parties." The time when those who oppose "Big Government" (read: either President Obama, the Democratic Party, liberals/progressives, a combination of the three or all of the above) are preparing for what they promise to be an event bigger than the Million Man March , the 2006 LA protests , the anti-war movement and the current protests against the banks combined. The biggest link between the two events is the sense that "right wing extremism" and "conservatism" has somehow come to mean the same thing (at least, judging by the various reactions ) despite President Obama's statements to the contrary. Obama has been careful not to accuse his critics of being anti-American (unlike his predecessor), but at the same time he'...

Thanks to the wonders of " Pre -Blog" (think " precrime ") we've been able to anticipate the next nonsensical online rant/blog/Twitter from neo-conservatives who are too busy crying about not being in power to actually do something to help the GOP. You see : The whole world, it seems, wants to know: What kind of dog are the Obamas getting and, for goodness sake, when? Speaking to PEOPLE at the White House recently, Michelle Obama leaned in and confided: "You're getting some scoops here." So, when? In April, Mrs. Obama says – after she and the President take daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, on a vacation for spring break. [snip] And what kind of dog will soon be frolicking on the South Lawn? Mrs. Obama says the family is looking for a rescue Portuguese water dog who is "old enough" and a "match" for the family dynamic. Where does the afore-mentioned Kennedy connection come in? Glad you asked: "Temperamentally they're s...

Yes, you better believe it. Daily Kos diarist dday has the details . Bottom line: ideological, GOP-loving lawyer refuses to leave during the very normal transitioning period when the New Administration cleans out the old people in favor for their people. President Obama will be forced to fire said lawyer, and the GOP/conservative base/Fox News will go Coo-Coo for Coco Puffs. Basically, the Bizarro Version of the US Attorney Firing Scandal .

"We’ve won the war." -- Bill Kristol. It's been building for awhile now; this surreal whitewash of eight years of incompetance and nepotism. Of the neo-conservatives playing limp biscuit with our Constitution. Of our citizens being fired, kicked out of their houses, dying and so much more because for too long profits (both financial and political) was a higher priority than people. And now it culminates with the ultimate slap in the face ; that the one thing that has defined the Bush Administration and the current Republican Party -that they (and only they) can win the war in Iraq and so they must remain in office 4EVA- is now being flushed because the black guy from the Democratic Party won last month. All that talk about having secret plans, about needing to "fight them over there," about "staying the course" and not showing weakness and being involved in this for 50-to-100 years... forget about it . Because we've "won." And all it took...

Unlike some of the blogs I frequent, I choose not to take a peek at the soft white underbelly known as "the fringe," whether it be people who think President Bush called Osama bin Laden to schedule the 9/11 attacks or the people who believe that Hillary Clinton used her early membership at the Black Panthers to kill a guy. However, every now and then, these brave bloggers/websites stumble across something that even I can't help but gloss over. Such as this surreal Darth Vader/Luke Skywalker connection that's trying to be made in the face of logic, reason, physics and reality . Now Poorman , Sadly No! , and Ezra Klein are on the verge of engaging in a Stewart/Colbert/O'Brien feud, and we don't wants that. No, no, no! So here's my request to the so-called "conservatives" who think they actually hold some kind of sway in the base of their party: stop . I like to fanfic as much as the next American with a vivid imagination, but to even say that Malco...

Four years ago, maybe somebody like Corsi would have been able to get away with a smear book (in fact, it was Corsi and his Swift Boat buddies who attacked John Kerry). But things have thankfully changed: Eric Boehlert on Corsi's inability to let go of past tactics and his sensitivity to actual vetting . Boston Globe has story that shows why Corsi should not be trusted, and it has nothing to do with Barack Obama. These are just two examples of what the press needs to do when someone comes out with a book that's determined to tear an individual down: vet them. After all, it's that what FoxNews wanted for Scott McClellan when he wrote his book (which, compared to Corsi's was far from being a smear book)? There's a saying, "Don't shoot the messenger." But I strongly believe that the "messenger" in that quote was traditionally thought to be neutral and/or impartial. Corsi is neither.

He goes up against a guy from Media Matters and tries to defend his Barack Obama smear book: Funny how outlets like FoxNews painted former Press Secretary Scott McClellan as someone trying to make a buck selling books, yet treat Corsi as someone trying to inform the public. UPDATE: Crooks & Liars has more . UBER-UPDATE: Via Daily Kos , Camp Obama has a rebuttal for Mr. Corsi. I think that for any future shows, if the host can't say, "Have you seen Sen. Obama's response, Mr. Corsi?" than Corsi should be dragged away.
