Why The Jungle Book is One of the Best Disney Animated Movie

  1. The Villain is neither over-the-top nor disturbingly malicious: Shere Khan is "powerful, deadly, and sophisticated." The Wolf Pack tries to kick Mowgli out before he even arrives in the movie. Kaa, the biggest snake in the movie universe before Anaconda (and also a villain), didn't want anything to do with him. He's like a cross between Razorclaw, Lex Luthor and Severus Snape. And that's a good thing.
  2. The songs: Most Disney songs are memorable and singable (A Whole New World rocks, BTW), but how many make you want to dance? When Baloo burst through that door and broke it down with King Louie, I'll admit it: I was dancing with them. The TMI quota of this post has been honored.
  3. It set the tone: Trust me, Aladdin, Tarzan and Lion King wouldn't have been half as awesome without this movie as it's template. Whether you're talking characters, storyline, animations or music, you can see elements of TJB in these classics.
  4. The different dynamics: How Bagheera and Baloo viewed jungle life (and consequently whether Mowgli should stay); what constitutes power (for Shere Khan it was killing man; for King Louie it was joining them by acquiring fire); how everyone saw Mowgli (friend, threat, annoyance, food, means of political advancement)
  5. The aspects of "law in order": they pretty much let Kaa roam around, despite being a constant threat; the Wolf Pack's quasi-senatorial makeup; King Louie ruled little outside his "kingdom;" Shere Khan's ability to go as he pleases with no real challenge; the war elephants (who never seem to fight anyone).
  6. Last but not least, relationships. Leave it to Disney to come up with a creative way of explaining why female characters were of short supply in this movie:

In that video is the reason why so many sane men do so many crazy things. I'm surprised she didn't flash Mowgli after he got her more water.

I actually have "I wanna be like you" in my five-star playlist on my I-pod. And I like the cool ease with which Shere Khan moves and speaks. It's also nice that he's a simple villian - all he wants to do is kill Mowgli, rather than destroy the world. Real villains are better than over-the-top ones.
