Better Impeached Than Never
Five years after standing at the podium of an aircraft carrier and saying "major combat operations in Iraq have ended" under a banner that said "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED," the White House now says that the "mission" in question was for that specific fleet.
Here's a few reasons why that explanation shouldn't be taken seriously:
- President Bush was positioned directly in front of the banner. If the banner had nothing to do with his speech, or if his people didn't want to use the banner to their advantage, the banner would have been moved or the president would have chosen different spot to speak.
- It took five years to get an explanation that could have come anytime between five hours to five weeks. Are we to believe that the White House couldn't get a straight answer on the banner?
- When the president was asked about some mistakes he's made during his 2004 run, he listed things like saying "Bring 'Em On" but said nothing about the banner.
- The White House's perception of reality has been historically screwed. They've denied torturing people (despite Abu Gharib and the recent story of White House officials meeting about re-defining torture). They've denied global warming, even as stories of polar bears drowning make the news. They've denied the reality of Iraq, as American soldiers and Iraqi citizens die everyday. They deny their attempts to provoke Iran, even as another ship goes near the territory. They're denying our current recession, even as they hurry to send us checks to make us forget it.
Honestly, this is the type of lame "oh, by the way" lip service I'd expect from a president who's a month away from leaving office. The only surprising thing about this story is that it happened so early.
