Caron Butler, Seize Your Destiny!

Last night, I tried to make the case that Caron Butler is the X-Factor in the Wiz-Cavs series. Now I'm back with some proof.

2007-2008 REGULAR SEASON:
  1. 12/5/07: With an injured Gilbert Arenas out and a good performance by Antawn Jamison, Butler puts in (points/rebounds/assists) 27/7/2 and the Wizards win by 19.
  2. 1/23/08: With an injured Arenas out an a below-average performance by Jamison, Butler puts in 10/5/1 and lose by 36.
  3. 2/22/08: With an injured Arenas out and a good performance by Jamison, Butler (who was also injured) did not play and Cleveland won by one.
  4. 3/13/08: With an injured Arenas out and a very good performance by Jamison, Butler contributes 19/6/1 and the Wizards win by two.

2008 PLAYOFFS ROUND ONE:

  1. 4/19/08: A big boost from Arenas off the bench + great performance by Jamison + Butler goes 14/4/4 = Wizards lose by seven (NOTE: the Wizards had virtually no help from the bench).
  2. 4/21/08: A small boost from Arenas off the bench + decent performance by Jamison + Butler goes 12/7/5 = Wizards lose by 30 (NOTE: this was a rare occasion where two players other than LeBron James were on).
  3. 4/24/08: Arenas plays ten minutes + decent performance by Jamison + Butler going 17/3/4 = Wizards win by 36 (NOTE: Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson both scored over their average, and bench player Roger Mason, Jr., doubled his scoring average).
  4. 4/27/08: Arenas plays 32 minutes + great performance by Jamison + Butler going 19/2/4 = Wizards lose by three (NOTE: Cavs' Delonte West scored way over his average and the Wizards' bench underperformed overall).
  5. 4/30/08: No Arenas + subpar performance by Jamison + Butler going for 32/9/5 = Wizards win by one (NOTE: The Cavs West's and Wally Szczerbiak's respective good and poor performances made the overall backcourt production normal).

Bottom line: Butler needs to score, rebound and pass bigtime (aka, make his imprint on the game) in order for the Wizards to have a chance to win. I'm thinking at least 25 points, 10+ rebounds and 5+ assists. If you add this kind of output with a good performance by Jamison, staying on the boards, and getting something respectable from the bench, then the Wizards are going to the Second Round.

But it all starts with Butler.

(SPECIAL NOTE: In my original draft, I forgot that Arenas came off the bench and played in Games One and Two. So apologies to him and the guys).
