Election Issue: Abortion

I've written about abortion as an election issue before, but this story shows why it's important to think about what type of justices a President McCain or President Obama might select:

TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- A baby girl was found inside a bag and died a short time later. Now police are searching for the newborn's parents.

The bag containing the baby was found at about noon Sunday by workers clearing an overgrown field near a church near the 6300 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park.

Emergency workers were called to the scene and performed CPR, but the girl died about an hour later at a local hospital.

I don't want to say that this type of thing will increase if abortion are outlawed outright, but it's just as likely to happen as those "backroom illegal abortions." Only in this case, the reasoning for the person leaving the baby in the dumpster is: "They had the child, so they didn't commit abortion. If anything, they are guilty of abandonment."

Of course, the social conservatives has never made infant abandonment a key component of their so-called "right-to-life" crusade. And that's been my biggest beef with this particular mantra: they only seem to care about the child being born, and after that they could care less what happens to them (infant, children, teens, etc.).

But just like the mother of that unfortunate infant, we really don't know the background of any woman who chooses to have an abortion. And we shouldn't (assuming, of course, the woman isn't legally insane) because regardless of what anyone says, it's a decision that should ultimately rest with the mother...and unless these "right-to-life" people would like the government to start adopting children in order to keep them alive and healthy (and even that has it's drawbacks), or set up a program to help the mothers take care of them, they need to shut the hell up.

And don't get me started on how this whole mess conflicts with the whole "let the states decide" line conservatives like to use for the other issues.
