Is not, "What took him so long to quit his church?" It was obviously a decision that weighed heavily on him.

No, the question is "By quitting, how many votes did he keep, and how many votes will he gain?" I have a feeling that the answer to the second part of that question is, "Minimal, because some people will always look for a reason not to vote for him."
