Not So Fast...She Still Has Options
But before one sides gloats and the other starts going ballistic, lets address the other question/issue: what happens to Hillary Clinton? Assuming "POTUS" is no longer an option, here are some remaining choices that I'm sure any politician would clamor for:
- (virtually permanent) Senator from New York
- Senate Majority Leader
- Cabinet Member of (potential) President Obama's Administration
- Vice President of the Obama Administration
- Supreme Court Justice
No these are the most heard/seen options I've gathered from talking to people of various walks of life and political affiliations, as well as checking out some blogs. I'm half inclined to ask an elected official because I'm sure to get an experience response, but I'm afraid that at this juncture I won't get a completely honest one.
I don't see Clinton vying for either #1 or #3 because one doesn't "advance" her anywhere and the other would put her too much in the background.
#2 would put her in the spotlight, but how often it shines would depend on her relationship with the White House and how she would handle resistance from the Minority Party (if she thought this primary was a fight, wait until she has to deal with Republicans in the Senate).
#3 would get her closer to her goal than the others, but after the way Cheney has used (and abused) the VP position, I can't see her out there "wheelin' & dealin'." She would have a podium, though.
#5 would give her so much decision-making power and solidify her as a modern-day champion for women (regardless of her initial court decisions). But again, who really follows the SCOTUS on a regular basis.
If I were her, regardless of tonight's outcome I would lay low for awhile. Conservatives are probably pissed right now that they may not be able to use their Bag O' Clinton Hate Talking Points, and may just prematurely dip into it should they suspect that she may have a defined role in the coming months. If the Democrats want a majority in Congress, the White House and a chance to balance out the Supreme Court, the last thing they need is to be distracted by silly Whitewater retreads.
