American Men: Don't Vote With Your Penis
History is full of stories where reasonable, rational heterosexual men do stupid crap simply because they allow hormones to override their logic. In some ways, it's almost as bad as allowing fear to make us go against our best interests (see: Iraq War, Patriot Act).
So to see this story on how people are warming up to the idea that Sarah Palin is a "MILF" is not shocking but certainly depressing. In light of how the media treated Hillary Clinton about her physical appearance (the Long/Short being: she's old and therefore unattractive), it's even more disturbing. Quite frankly, I don't see how someone's sex appeal translates to being a political dynamo.
Granted, there is some truth that there's a correlation between how physically attractive a person and the amount of leeway they're given (especially celebrities). But with all the initial talk from the GOP about Barack Obama being a celebrity and nothing else, you would think that Republicans and conservatives would be split on this latest characterization of Gov. Palin (well, they are split, but not on this).
But no. The argument is Sarah Palin is truly new and unique, whereas Obama is some kind of con man. Palin's appeal is her vernacular; Obama's language is elitist. Palin's utter lack of foreign policy is dismissed because of McCain's presence; Obama's visit to Germany is tantamount to treason. Palin required minimal vetting, whereas Obama, after 18 months of going through the Clinton Machine, is still an unknown.
I'm more than accustomed to Republicans endorsing their candidate and denouncing a Democratic one, even if the two share a majority of traits (Karl Rove slammed Tim Kaine for basically the same reasons he later praised Sarah Palin for).
This is slightly different. In the end, the GOP knows what it's doing: presenting a pretty face with a credible title and the ability to deliver snappy one-liners as an alternative to the educated black man. The fact that the GOP's social conservative base didn't blow up over the fact that her teen daughter is pregnant speaks volumes. The fact that business conservatives aren't screaming for Mitt Romney to replace Gov. Palin speaks volumes. The fact that any Republican who is pissed off at the Bush Administration isn't shouting at the top of their lungs over the fact that the McCain Campaign has basically cut and paste the old Bush Campaign speaks volumes.
Or at least it would, if it weren't for the fact that the GOP thinks Palin's "MILF-ness" is enough to get people to (once again) vote against their best interests.
