Michael Steele is mocked not just because he's crazy, but because many of the things he says does not fit the current GOP platform. Should the Republicans actually listen to and (gasp!) embrace some of Steele's more moderate political non sequiturs, they may avoid becoming a marginal party.

Or wait until the economy collapses some more, and people realize that things are never going to go back to "normal", and get scared and angry and start looking for someone to blame.
